A Quantum Leap in Industrial Measurement, Born in Ohio

Our Legacy of Innovation: The Story of the Versagage

Discover how Northern Manufacturing’s pursuit of excellence led to the creation of the Versagage – a revolutionary handheld digital measuring instrument that transformed industrial metrology. Born from a critical challenge, this homegrown invention became a global standard, embodying our spirit of practical problem-solving and innovation.

The Challenge: Meeting the Highest Standards

In the late 1980s, Northern Manufacturing was pursuing the prestigious

Ford Q1 certification, a quality standard awarded only to suppliers with the most rigorous manufacturing and verification processes. This presented a significant challenge. The metrology tools available at the time were simply not efficient enough to meet Ford’s demanding requirements. We faced a critical gap between traditional hand tools, like calipers, and large, expensive, stationary machines that couldn’t be used on the factory floor. This business imperative became the catalyst for a groundbreaking invention.

The Solution: A Quantum Leap in Measurement

In 1990, Quintin Smith invented the Versagage—a portable, versatile, handheld digital measuring instrument. It filled the gap between calipers and large CMM machines.
