Large stainless fabrication under the shop cranes at Northern Manufacturing in Oak Harbor

Stainless Steel Fabricators Who Build What Others Can't

A 40,000 sq ft walled-off stainless-only room sits inside the 160,000 sq ft Oak Harbor shop, and the rest of the floor runs primarily stainless, with carbon capacity when carbon is specified.

40,000 sq ft

dedicated stainless-only space

A walled-off room within the facility that never sees carbon steel: dedicated tooling, consumables, and welders. No cross-contamination, no free iron on finished surfaces.

What other shops can't build

Two projects other shops passed on, or tried and could not hold spec.

large-diameter stainless exhaust duct with a conical end, staged in the Northern shop

Large-diameter exhaust duct sections that mated on the first attempt

Every section was dry-fit against its mating part in the shop and dropped onto the in-plant flanges on the first attempt, with no forced alignment and no field rework.

Large-diameter stainless exhaust ductwork that had to mate to existing plant flanges with zero forced alignment on site.

Interior of Northern Manufacturing's dedicated stainless-only fabrication area

40,000 sq ft of fabrication floor that never sees carbon steel

Carbon and stainless share the same shop in almost every fabrication facility. Free iron transfers from grinders, clamps, tables, and weld spatter, and shows up weeks later as rust bloom or pitting on finished stainless surfaces. What makes us different is how we keep carbon off the stainless.

  • Dedicated tooling, consumables, and welders, never shared with carbon steel
  • Free-iron verification per ASTM A380 on critical-service assemblies
  • Separate grinders, clamps, and work tables. Zero cross-contamination path.
  • No rust bloom or pitting weeks after the part ships

Plate to passivation, under one roof

Plate to passivation, no subcontracting

Most shops outsource pickling, passivation, or post-weld finishing. Your part travels, waits in queues, picks up handling damage between stations. We don't. From plate to passivation, the work happens here, under one quality system, with one accountable name.

Welders who stay qualified on the code your project lives under

AWS D1.6 stainless qualifications aren't optional for critical stainless work, and they aren't static.

  • 60+ welders with active qualifications on AWS D1.6, D1.1, and ASME Section IX
  • Continuous recertification cadence, not one-and-done
  • WPS and PQR packages on file, aligned to your drawing callouts
  • Welder continuity logs available on request before award

Shop processes in the order we run them

Batches of formed stainless steel angle brackets with slotted holes stacked on a pallet with inspection tags

Stainless Steel Laser Cutting Services

A 12 kW Trumpf fiber laser cuts stainless sheet and plate up to 1.25 inches thick, a 3,200 W CO2 cell runs production sheet behind it, and an 8-person engineering team programs every nest from your CAD.

Precision Bending and Forming Services

Five CNC press brakes, two Trumpf TruBend 5320s among them, form stainless from sheet gauges through heavy plate, with springback compensation set per grade and formed dimensions verified against your CAD model before parts move to welding.

Stainless Steel Welding Services

60+ AWS-certified welders running ASME BPVC Section IX qualified procedures across nine processes (GTAW, GMAW, FCAW, SAW, robotic, K-TIG, and more) on stainless, duplex, and nickel alloys.

Stainless Steel Pickling and Passivation

Welding leaves stainless with heat tint, free iron, and a chromium-depleted layer that fails service life if it ships out the door. We pickle and passivate to ASTM A380 and A967 in a 55 ft booth, and run copper-sulfate verification (ASTM A967 Practice D) when your specification or purchase order calls for it.

Large stainless steel assembly staged inside the bead blast room at Northern Manufacturing

Stainless Steel Bead Blasting Services

Bead blasting gives stainless a uniform, non-directional matte finish that hides handling marks and leaves the surface in compression, run on dedicated stainless equipment with ASTM A380 pickling available under the same roof.

Trial Fit and Functional Testing

Before your fabrication ships, we assemble it on our floor, verify it against your CAD model with a Leica AT960 laser tracker, and exercise the moving parts, so a fit problem costs hours in the shop instead of days in the field.

Common questions

What engineers and procurement managers ask before they send a drawing.

What does Northern Manufacturing fabricate?

Custom stainless steel equipment and weldments: process and storage tanks, pipe spools, ductwork, structural assemblies, and sanitary equipment, in austenitic, duplex, and nickel alloys. We also hold the ASME U (#63199) and PP (#63198) Certificates of Authorization and are authorized to build code pressure vessels and pressure piping to your specification at our Oak Harbor shop.

What grades and alloys do you run?

Austenitic 304, 316, 309, 321, and 347; duplex 2205, 2507, and LDX 2101; and nickel alloys including Hastelloy C-276, C-22, and AL-6XN. Welding procedures are qualified per ASME BPVC Section IX and AWS D1.6.

What makes a stainless-only shop different?

Within our 160,000 sq ft facility, a dedicated 40,000 sq ft stainless-only room runs no carbon steel, so there is no free-iron cross-contamination on the passive surface. The rest of the facility handles heavy fabrication and assembly, primarily stainless with carbon capacity when carbon is specified. Cutting, forming, welding, pickling, passivation, and inspection happen under one roof.

Do you provide material and weld documentation?

We provide the records your specification and purchase order require: Material Test Reports traced by heat, weld maps with WPS references, welder continuity logs, PMI, and NDE reports, available on request.

Send us a drawing. We'll tell you what it takes.

Engineering reviews every drawing, and an engineer is on the phone when you need one.
