Austenitic Stainless Steel Fabrication
(304, 316, 309, 310, 321, 330, 347)

ISO 9001:2015 Certified
ASME BPVC IX Qualified
Founded 1951

Austenitic stainless steels (304, 316, 309, 310, 321, 330, 347) are the workhorses of industrial fabrication, chosen for corrosion resistance, formability, and weldability across every industry Northern serves. But “common” does not mean “simple.” Each grade has specific metallurgical requirements that determine whether your fabricated component performs for decades or fails in months. Sensitization, distortion, work hardening, and contamination are real risks when fabricators treat austenitic stainless like carbon steel with a shinier finish.

Our Austenitic Fabrication Capabilities

Northern Manufacturing has fabricated austenitic stainless since 1951. We run 304, 316, 309, 310, 321, 330, and 347 daily across food and beverage, water treatment, chemical processing, power generation, and architectural applications. Our ASME BPVC Section IX qualified welding procedures, dedicated stainless-only production space, and in-house pickling and passivation line are built around getting these grades right. Complete fabrication from raw plate to finished, passivated components, all under one roof.

Materials Handled

We have qualified welding procedures and daily production experience across the full austenitic family

  • Standard: 304 / 304L
  • Marine Grade: 316 / 316L
  • High-Temperature & Stabilized: 309, 310, 321, 330, 347

Why Partner with an Austenitic Stainless Fabrication Specialist?

Austenitic stainless steels are forgiving compared to duplex or nickel alloys, but that forgiveness has limits. A fabricator who doesn’t control heat input on 304L can sensitize the heat-affected zone, precipitating chromium carbides at grain boundaries that destroy corrosion resistance. A shop that uses carbon steel grinding wheels on stainless embeds iron particles that initiate surface corrosion. A welder who runs too hot on thin-gauge 316L warps the part beyond tolerance. These aren’t exotic failure modes. They happen every day in shops that treat stainless as “just another steel.”

We Prevent Sensitization and Contamination

Our deep experience prevents the costly failures and delays that occur when fabricators cannot meet the tight tolerances and complex weld procedures required for materials like 304L and 316L stainless steel.

We Control Distortion on Complex Assemblies

Austenitic stainless conducts heat about 40% slower than carbon steel, which means weld distortion is a constant challenge. We manage it through controlled weld sequencing, balanced heat input, custom fixturing, and laser welding on heat-sensitive joints.

We Deliver Verifiable Quality

As an ISO 9001:2015 certified and ASME-compliant fabricator, we provide the documentation and traceability required for your most critical quality audits.

Quality Assurance & Verification for Austenitic Components

We build trust through verification.
Our ISO 9001:2015 certified Quality Management System incorporates grade-specific inspection protocols for every austenitic alloy we run.

ASME Qualified Welding

All welding procedures qualified per ASME BPVC Section IX and AWS D1.6 for stainless steel structural and process applications.

Ferrite Content Measurement

We control heat input and interpass temperature per our qualified WPS to prevent chromium carbide precipitation in the heat-affected zone.

Positive Material Identification (PMI)

Our inspectors use handheld XRF analyzers to verify the alloy chemistry of all incoming stainless steel, confirming the material matches the MTR before fabrication begins.

Comprehensive Documentation

We provide full documentation packages, including Material Test Reports (MTRs).

Quality and Compliance as a Cornerstone

For our partners in regulated industries, meticulous documentation and verifiable quality are non-negotiable. Our entire operation is built upon a framework of rigorous quality assurance.

Challenge

A water treatment equipment manufacturer needed custom stainless steel headers and manifolds for a municipal filtration system. The components required precise fit-up tolerances, full-penetration welds per ASME BPVC Section IX, and ASTM A380 passivation for long-term corrosion resistance in a chlorinated water environment.

Solution

We collaborated with the client, fabricating the assembly from 316L stainless steel. Our CWI-supervised welding team executed all joints using qualified GTAW procedures, controlling heat input to preserve the material’s superior corrosion resistance.

Outcome

The finished components shipped with a complete documentation package: MTRs traceable to heat numbers, weld maps, NDE reports, passivation records, and dimensional inspection results. The assemblies have been in service with zero corrosion issues.
